All about vintage coffee grinders and coffee mills

Arcade No. 25 Coffee Mill

Arcade No. 25 coffee mill was one of the earlier glass jar mills (manufactured by the Arcade Manufacturing Co. in Freeport, Illinois) with its name embossed beneath the jar’s neck.

The original model had an air-tight glass hopper. The hopper screws into the neck. The metal parts are coated with black enamel. It was designed to be attached to the kitchen wall. The glass hopper holds one pound of coffee beans. 15 1/2″ tall.

This early Arcade coffee mill shown above with no markings is the base model of Arcade No. 25, which was manufactured by Arcade in large numbers as Arcade No. 25. Some late models have names embossed on the neck beneath the jar. Known names are “Arcade”, “Lees”, and “Atwood”

The easiest way to identify an Arcade No. 25 coffee mill is by finding the embossed writings on the glass hopper and the metal lid. Looking at the glass hopper, you can see “Arcade 25”, and the lid is stamped “Arcade.”

But not all Arcade No. 25 mills have that hopper. The early Arcade mills were manufactured without any markings on them. These are hard to find nowadays, mainly because few people know about them.

Arcade No. 25 vs Crystal Series

Please note that Arcade No 25 coffee grinder resembles Arcade’s most popular Arcade Crystal series. I see a lot of coffee mills sold online with mismatched hoppers and catch cups, especially on eBay. Many listings have no 25 coffee mills mixed with crystal coffee mill parts. Some Crystal mills are advertised as No 25 because the owner replaced the broken hopper with Arcade No 25 hopper. Crystal coffee grinders have adjustable fineness control (thumb-screw fineness adjustment)

As you can see from the price chart below, it’s all about the condition of the coffee bean grinder. The same mill can go for as high as $275 but as low as $41. Original catch-up is a must if you expect to get the maximum price for your vintage coffee mill.
